Korean saju compatibility, explained
Saju (사주, "four pillars") turns the year, month, day and hour you were born into eight characters, made of heavenly stems and earthly branches. A compatibility reading puts two charts side by side and looks at how those characters interact.
Get our saju reading1. The day master
The heavenly stem of your birth day stands for you. A reading starts with the element of each person's day master. The five elements feed each other in a cycle (Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → Wood). If one person's element feeds the other's, that's a nurturing match; the same element means you understand each other easily but share the same stubborn streak; if one checks the other, one tends to steady the other.
2. Stem unions
Some pairs of day masters form a "union", read as a strong natural pull: Gap–Gi (甲己), Eul–Gyeong (乙庚), Byeong–Sin (丙辛), Jeong–Im (丁壬), Mu–Gye (戊癸).
3. Day branches: living together
The earthly branch of your birth day is read as the partner and home. Branches that harmonise suggest an easy daily rhythm; clashing branches mean more to align day to day.
4. Zodiac signs and the five elements
Birth-year animals that form a trine or harmony back each other up; clashing animals are a mild caution. Finally, if one chart lacks an element that the other has plenty of, the pair is read as filling each other in.
Don't know your birth time?
Without a birth time, three pillars (year, month, day) are used. The day master and day branch, the heart of a compatibility reading, come from the date alone.
Why Gunghap Halmae adds 24 everyday questions
Couples rarely fight about elements. They fight about reply speed, close friends, money and weekends. Granny reads your saju match and compares your everyday rules, then tells you where you'll clash and how to talk it through.
